Data Collection Policy

I’m John Duthie, the author of Alive and Not Kicking and the only person behind this website. This page explains, in plain English, what information I collect when you visit alive-and-not-kicking.com or subscribe to my mailing list, how it’s used, and your rights.
I’ve tried to keep this short and honest. If anything isn’t clear, email me at john@alive-and-not-kicking.com, and I’ll explain or fix it.
What I collect
When you subscribe to my mailing list through this website, I collect:
- Your email address.
- The date and time you subscribed.
That’s it for personal info. I don’t want your name, address, phone number, age, gender, location, payment details, or anything else.
If you just visit the website and don’t subscribe, my hosting provider (HostPapa) keeps the usual server logs: your IP address, browser type, which pages you looked at, and when you visited. Every website does this automatically. I don’t use analytics or tracking cookies. No Facebook Pixel, no Google Analytics, nothing like that.
Why I collect it
I collect your email address for one reason: to send you what I said I would. That means the free sample of Alive and Not Kicking, the odd update about the book, and first news of the release date.
I do not, and will never:
- Sell your email address.
- Rent, trade, or share it with any third party for marketing purposes.
- Send you anything you didn’t sign up for.
- Use your email for purposes other than communicating about Alive and Not Kicking and related work.
Who processes your information?
My mailing list is managed through MailerLite, an email service provider based in Lithuania. When you subscribe, your email address is stored on MailerLite’s secure servers, which are located in the European Union and the United States. MailerLite is GDPR-compliant and has its own privacy practices, which you can read at mailerlite.com/legal/privacy-policy.
My website runs on HostPapa, and they handle the usual server logs I mentioned earlier.
I don’t share your information with anyone else.
How long will I keep your information?
I’ll keep your email address until you unsubscribe, or until I close the mailing list, whichever happens first. If you stop opening emails for ages, I might take you off the list to keep things tidy. You can also ask me to delete your data any time. See the next section for how.
Server logs from HostPapa are retained in accordance with HostPapa’s standard retention period.
Your rights
You can, at any time and without giving a reason:
- Unsubscribe: every email I send has a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you’re off the list for good.
- Ask what I have on file — email me at john@alive-and-not-kicking.com and I’ll send you everything I hold about you (which, as noted above, is just your email address and subscription date).
- Ask me to delete your data: just email me. I’ll take you off MailerLite as soon as I can and let you know when it’s done.
- Ask me to correct your data: not much to fix, since I only have your email, but if you want to update it, just let me know.
If you’re in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or other regions with strong data protection laws, you have these rights under those laws regardless. If you’re in Australia, you have these rights under the Australian Privacy Principles. If you’re somewhere else, you have them because I think they’re the right rights to give.
Cookies
The website only uses the bare minimum of cookies, just enough for WordPress and the MailerLite form to work. I don’t use cookies to track you, build a profile, or follow you around the internet.
Children
This website and the Alive and Not Kicking memoir are for adults. If you’re under 16, please get a parent or guardian’s okay before subscribing to the mailing list.
Changes to this policy
If I change this policy, I’ll update the ‘Last updated’ date at the top. If it’s a big change, like collecting new types of data, I’ll email subscribers so you can decide if you still want to be on the list.

I read every email and try to reply within a few days. If you’re emailing about privacy (like deleting your data or asking what I have on file), please put ‘Privacy’ in the subject line so I don’t miss it.
Complaints
If you’re not happy with how I’ve handled your information and we can’t sort it immediately, you can raise it with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au. EU/UK readers can contact their national data protection authority.
I’ve written this policy in plain English on purpose. If anything sounds vague, it’s not meant to be. Just email me, and I’ll clear it up.
