Privacy Policy
Last updated: 14th June 2026
I’m John Duthie, the author of Alive and Not Kicking and the only person behind this website. This page explains, in plain English, what information I collect when you visit alive-and-not-kicking.com or subscribe to my mailing list, how it’s used, and your rights.
I’ve tried to keep this short and honest. If anything isn’t clear, email me at john@alive-and-not-kicking.com and I’ll explain or fix it.
What I collect
When you subscribe to my mailing list through this website, I collect:
- Your email address.
- The date and time you subscribed.
That’s the entire personal information set. I don’t ask for your name, postal address, phone number, age, gender, location, payment details, or anything else.
When you visit the website without subscribing, my hosting provider (HostPapa) records standard server logs — your IP address, browser type, the pages you viewed, and the time of visit. This is the same information any website collects automatically. I don’t have analytics or tracking cookies installed. I don’t use Facebook Pixel, Google Analytics, or similar tracking tools.
Why I collect it
I collect your email address for one purpose: to send you what I promised. That means the free sample of Alive and Not Kicking, occasional updates about the book, and first news of the release date.
I do not, and will never:
- Sell your email address.
- Rent, trade, or share it with any third party for marketing purposes.
- Send you anything you didn’t sign up for.
- Use your email for any purpose other than communicating about Alive and Not Kicking and related work.
Who processes your information?
My mailing list is managed through MailerLite, an email service provider based in Lithuania. When you subscribe, your email address is stored on MailerLite’s secure servers, which are located in the European Union and the United States. MailerLite is GDPR-compliant and has its own privacy practices, which you can read at mailerlite.com/legal/privacy-policy.
My website is hosted by HostPapa, which handle standard server logs as described above.
I don’t share your information with anyone else.
How long will I keep your information?
I keep your email address until you unsubscribe, or until I shut down the mailing list (whichever comes first). If you haven’t opened any emails for a long time, I may eventually remove you to keep the list healthy and current. You can also ask me to delete your data at any time — see the next section.
Server logs from HostPapa are kept according to HostPapa’s standard retention period.
Your rights
You can, at any time and without giving a reason:
- Unsubscribe — every email I send has a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you’re off the list permanently.
- Ask what I have on file — email me at john@alive-and-not-kicking.com and I’ll send you everything I hold about you (which, as noted above, is just your email address and subscription date).
- Ask me to delete your data — same email address. I’ll remove you from MailerLite within a reasonable time and confirm when it’s done.
- Ask me to correct your data — though there’s not much to correct since I only hold your email, if you want to update it to a different address, just let me know.
If you’re in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or other regions with strong data protection laws, you have these rights under those laws regardless. If you’re in Australia, you have these rights under the Australian Privacy Principles. If you’re somewhere else, you have them because I think they’re the right rights to give.
Cookies
The website uses minimal cookies — essentially only what’s needed for WordPress and the MailerLite form to work. I don’t use cookies to track you across sessions, build a profile, or follow you to other websites.
Children
This website and the Alive and Not Kicking memoir are written for adult readers. If you’re under 16, please don’t subscribe to the mailing list without a parent or guardian’s permission.
Changes to this policy
If I make changes to this policy, I’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of the page. If the changes are significant — like adding new categories of data collection — I’ll send an email to subscribers as well, so you can decide whether you’re still happy to be on the list.
How to contact me
Email: john@alive-and-not-kicking.com
I read every email and try to reply within a few days. For privacy-related requests (deleting your data, asking what I have on file), please put “Privacy” somewhere in the subject line so it doesn’t get lost.
Complaints
If you’re not happy with how I’ve handled your information and we can’t sort it out directly, you can raise it with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au. EU/UK readers can contact their national data protection authority.
This policy is written in plain English on purpose. If anything in it sounds vague, that’s not deliberate — email me and I’ll clarify.
